Abstract
EPIDEMICS CAUSED by influenza virus are associated with considerable morbidity and mortality, especially in patients with high-risk conditions.1,2 It has been estimated that persons who are 65 years and older account for more than 80% of all pneumonia- and influenza-related deaths.3 In the Netherlands, the excess mortality caused by influenza is estimated at more than 2000 persons per year. Generally, the increased incidence in influenza-associated mortality is thought to be age related.2Keywords
