Severe sepsis, a syndrome of acute infection complicated by organ dysfunction, is caused by a dysregulated systemic inflammatory response. Sepsis can progress to systemic hypotension (septic shock), manifest by hypoperfusion of vital organs, multiple organ dysfunction, and death.1-3
