Abstract
IMPOTENCE is a common disorder that in many people has a profound effect on their well-being. Recently, the field of erectile dysfunction has undergone considerable change. There is now an improved understanding of the physiologic mechanisms of penile erection and how these can be altered to cause impotence. New diagnostic tests make possible the recognition of specific causes of erectile dysfunction. Treatments such as intracavernosal injection of vasoactive agents by patients, vascular reconstructive surgery, and vacuum erection devices have been added to the options of hormonal therapy, psychological counseling, and penile implants.
