Abstract
In this article, we explore the bond between management education and practice, and the tensions between knowledge and experience. We argue that the current paradigm of management education is one of `balance' and suggest that this be replaced by a new paradigm of `synthesis'. We define paradigm, offer a brief history of US management education as it relates to the development of the current paradigm, provide an explanation of the `paradigm of balance' and its prevailing manifestations in management education, propose a reconceptualization of management education from within a `paradigm of synthesis', and offer two recent innovations in management education as exemplars. Keywords
