This article describes the work of a research team at the open university in the Federal Republic of Germany, the Fernuniversitat in Hagen. The project investigates the environment of distance students with reference to the problems caused by ‘study plus work’ and ‘study plus work plus family’. Transcripts of extended interviews were analysed to build up a picture of the social and psychological environment of the students.
