HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors and the Risk of Hip Fractures in Elderly Patients

Abstract
Osteoporosis affects 20% of women older than 50 years and an even larger proportion of elderly women; fractures attributable to osteoporosis occur in approximately 1.5 million Americans annually.1-3 Although several recently approved medications effectively prevent and treat osteoporosis, no currently approved drug has been shown to stimulate bone formation activity by osteoblasts.4
