Abstract
An equation of the form D=D0eΔHRT is developed for interstitial diffusion in cubic lattices. This development uses a classical statistical mechanical treatment. Measurements of D for C in α-iron were made from -35° to 200°C. Combined with earlier data they extend the knowledge of D in this system from D=1020 to D=106 cm2/sec. The values of D0 and ΔH obtained by fitting the above equation to the experimental points give D0=0.02 cm2/sec. and ΔH=20,100 cal./mole.
