Evaluation of the Costs of Caring for the Senile Demented Elderly: A Pilot Study

Abstract
Economic costs were evaluated for 25 nursing home patients and 19 elderly living in their own homes gathered through a household survey. Using time records compiled by nurses or family members for a 2-week period, the costs incurred annually in caring for a senile demented elderly person at home were estimated to average $11,735, and in a nursing home, $22,458.
