No-Till Culture of Sweet Corn in Maryland With Reference to Insect Pests1

Abstract
In corn grown in a no-till culture, the armyworm, Pseudaletia unipuncta (Haworth), and the black cutworm, Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel), were more prevalent than in corn grown conventionally. Treatments applied at planting time, both granular and liquid sprays, indicated that chlorpyrifos and carbofuran were outstanding in their control of armyworm. Chlorpyrifos, Nem-a-Tak® 2L (cyclic methylene (diethoxyphosphinyl) dithioimidocarbamate) were effective for control of black cutworm. No-till culture resulted in more available water, especially under drought conditions. The difference between soil temperature under these 2 systems was negligible.
