BONE MARROW

Abstract
A review of the morphology and physiology of the bone marrow. The vascular system is described and the arguments given in favor of a closed circulation versus an open one. Other main topics include the distribution of the bone marrow, the formation of erythrocytes and white blood cells (granulocytes, lymphocytes, monocytes), and the various stages in the process of maturation, illustrated by diagrams. The numerical relation of the bone marrow cells to each other is given, and their relation to the vascular pattern. The characteristics of the various cells are discussed, their delivery into the circulation and the criteria for measuring the output of the various cells in the bone marrow. The important question of the bone marrow as an organ is emphasized and the mechanism for maintaining the normal structure is discussed from the vasomotor and chemical point of view. The possible factors are reviewed which may control the delivery of bone marrow cells and their maturation.
