Abstract
In this study, using a paper‐and‐pencil test consisting of multiple‐choice‐type situational questions which also require reasoning for the choices made, common misconceptions in light have been identified. A limited number of students were also interviewed and a questionnaire administered at standard XII and undergraduate level. It is found that most of the students understand the basic properties of light at a knowledge level and can also represent these, using line diagrams. They found difficulty in applying these concepts in novel situations.
