Abstract
Extinction coefficients are estimated from the rates of disappearance of bird species from islands severed from the Neotropical mainland at the close of the Pleistocene. These coefficients accurately predict the loss of species from Barro Colorado Island, Panama, over a recent 50-year period. Prescriptions are given for the preservation of six categories of extinction prone species. Keywords
