THE EFFECTS OF ANIMATION CUES ON VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT

Abstract
The effectiveness of animatedcues in electronic books on children's vocabulary development was investigated in this study. Fifteen Third Grade children from a suburban elementary school participated in a One Group Pretest-Posttest program evaluation. The children were given a pre-test requiring them to define six target words. They then listened to a poem from The New Kid on the Block CD ROM that contained the target words, and viewed animated cues designed to demonstrate the word meanings. Three days later the children were given a posttest containing the target words. A Wilcoxon Sign Test revealed a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (Z=3.30, Two-tailed P=.001) favoring the posttest. Suggestions for using electronic books to develop vocabulary are described.
