Integrating the Load Management Function into the Energy Control Center A Case History

Abstract
Carolina Power & Light Company began controlling residential water heaters via VHF radio in a pilot load marragement program in 1980. The system was controlled by a simple and inexpensive micro processor-based controller that was designed and built by Carolina Power & Light. In 1981 the Company began expanding the program to other areas and also began controlling residential central air conditioners. The growth of the program led to increased demands on the controller for sophistication and flexibility.
