PATHOLOGIC ASSESSMENT OF THE SURGICAL SPECIMEN

Abstract
A dramatic increase has occurred in the number of radical prostatectomies performed each year. At the author's center, approximately 15 radical prostatectomies were performed per year in the early 1980s in comparison with almost 1000 radical prostatectomies last year. Concurrently, there has been an explosion in articles dealing with the relation of conventional histologic parameters and biomarkers to progression following radical prostatectomy. This article reviews the handling of radical prostatectomy specimens and the relation of findings derived from the prostatectomy specimen to the prediction of postoperative prognosis.
