Biting Midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) as Vectors of Nonviral Animal Pathogens1

Abstract

A review is presented of the animal parasites (other than viruses) that are transmitted by Ceratopogonidae. The organisms involved (12 Protozoa, 18 Nematoda) are tabulated with their respective natural and experimental vectors. Tabulated summary data dealing with developmental characteristics of the parasites in their insect hosts are also given. The skin condition of horses known as “sweet itch” or “Queensland itch” is reviewed briefly.
