Abstract
FIREFIGHTING IS A STRENUOUS OCCUPATION THAT REQUIRES OPTIMAL LEVELS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS TO ENHANCE JOB PERFORMANCE AND DECREASE THE RISK OF INJURY. PHYSICAL FITNESS OUTCOMES CAN BE IMPROVED THROUGH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A COMPREHENSIVE FITNESS PROGRAM. THE PURPOSE OF THIS ARTICLE IS TO PROVIDE INSIGHT REGARDING THE DEVELOPMENT OF FITNESS PROGRAMS FOR FIREFIGHTERS BY DISCUSSING HOW TO CONDUCT A NEEDS ANALYSIS, GENERATE SUPPORT FOR A FITNESS PROGRAM WITHIN A FIRE DEPARTMENT, MANAGE RELATED LEGAL ISSUES, ASSESS FIREFIGHTER PERFORMANCE, AND DESIGN A FUNCTIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM.Keywords
