THE RAMAN SPECTRUM OF ETHYLENE

Abstract
The vibrational Raman spectrum of ethylene was photographed at gas pressures of 1–3 atm. with a reciprocal linear dispersion of 10.5 cm.−1 per mm. The rotational structures of the totally symmetric bands, ν1 and ν3, were analyzed using an approximate asymmetric top model; only the Q branch of ν2 was observed. In the complicated structure of the non-totally symmetric ν5, band a series of O, SQK branches was identified and the band origin determined as 3102.5 cm.−1. A satisfactory interpretation of a broad maximum at 1662 cm.−1 could not be given.
