Treatment advances have lengthened the life expectancy of many children with cancer, transforming the status of their disease from acute to chronic. This has brought about recognition of problems in adjustment, rehabilitation, and reintegration. This paper focuses upon the problems of returning the pediatric cancer patient to school, offering discussion of the types of school problems encountered, description of a psychosocial referral and intervention program, and illustrative case material. The rationale for returning these children to school and the implications for the general area of chronic diseases in children are discussed.
