The Vertebrate Eye Lens

Abstract
The vertebrate eye lens [human and animal] represents an unusual but efficient tissue for the elucidation of a number of representative biological processes. The highly specific, polymeric protein, .alpha.-crystallin, whose fate, after synthesis, can be followed by posttranslational modifications and self-assembly was discussed. This protein, a major constitutent of all mammalian species, can easily by purified and is very suitable for comparative studies of amino acid sequences.
