A dynamically segmented linear data model of the coast

Abstract
This article discusses the rationale behind choosing a dynamically segmented linear data model as the basis for a coastal zone geographic information system (GIS). The salient features and conceptual foundations of the data model are described, and the advantages that the approach brings to representing the coastal zone in a GIS database are explained. The concepts are illustrated with reference to an application of GIS for analyzing potential impacts of sea level rise on the coast of southwest Ireland.
