The Child as Logician or Methodologist? A Critique of Formal Operations

Abstract
Piaget’s conceptualization of concrete and formal operations is presented. The main contention is that Piaget has obfuscated logic, metaphysics, and methodology. The elucidation of this point and the proposal of an alternative understanding of formal operations include the discussion of: (1) alternative logical structures to explain formal reasoning behavior and the relations between (2) logic and metaphysics, (3) logic and methodology, (4) logic and necessity, and (5) logic and the actual-possible distinction.
