Inert dust insecticides: Part I. Mechanism of action

Abstract
Inert dusts such as carborundum, silica, and zinc-blende do not penetrate into the respiratory system of the grain weevil (Calandra granaria), and although large amts. are ingested, these seem to have little harmful effect. Dusts which were most effective in killing weevils (carborundum and silica) increased the rate of evaporation of water from the insects and caused death by desiccation.
