Augmentin (amoxycillin and clavulanic acid) therapy in complicated infections due to ?-lactamase producing bacteria

Abstract

Ninety-six patients with infections caused by β-lactamase producing organisms were treated with 124 courses of augmentin. In 101 urinary tract infections 92% of patients had a clear urine on treatment and at follow-up 64 (69%) were cured of their original infecting organism, although re-infection had occurred in 26 cases. Fifteen (71%) of 21 tissue infections showed bacteriological and clinical improvement. Augmentin in a dose of 375 mg(250 mgamoxycillin and 125 mgclavulanic acid) was well tolerated but 11 patients developed side effects, in 8 cases mild diarrhoea. The introduction of this new formulation provides a valuable oral treatment for infections caused by bacteria with multiple antibiotic resistance.
