Studies on Dental Aerobiology: III. Efficacy of Surgical Masks in Protecting Dental Personnel from Airborne Bacterial Particles

Abstract
Fifteen commercially available surgical masks were evaluated for efficacy in protecting dental personnel from bacterial aerosols generated from a patient's mouth. The filtering efficiency of masks tested varied from 14 to 99%. Two masks tested under wearing conditions showed no significant marginal leakage. The use of all masks evaluated is subject to several important limitations.
