Multiple antibiotic resistence among salmonellae in India

Abstract
The present status of multiple-drug resistant salmonellae prevalent in India has been assessed. Isolates of S. typhi varying in phage type but uniformly resistant to chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulphonamides and tetracycline, have been obtained from three different centres. Since 1975 an appreciable number of other serotypes from human and non-human sources have been found to possess multiple resistance involving between two and six antimicrobial agents. These serotypes included S. newport, S. wien, S. alachua, S. typhimurium, s. paratyphi A and S. anatum. All the multiply-resistant salmonellae studied were sensitive in vitro to cotrimoxazole.
