The safety of weekly plateletpheresis: effect on the donors' lymphocyte population

Abstract
Normal [human] donors were monitored before, during, and after 10 weekly donations of platelet concentrates prepared using the Hemonetics Model 30 blood processor. About a 20% decrease of lymphocytes occurred, with B cells being significantly decreased in 1/2 of these patients. While coincident Ig deficiencies did not develop in this short-term study, these may occur with a platelet donation prolongation, as was noted in previous studies. Additional studies are indicated to further delineate the lymphocyte depletion in normal platelet donors.
