Abstract
The classical problem of edge-preserving image smoothing is coped with by exploiting the properties of a rational filter. The proposed operator acts as a lowpass linear filter in uniform image areas; in presence of a detail, the coefficients of the pixels which are involved in the luminance transition are suitably modified. Some computer simulations show the capabilities of this technique. Keywords
