Percutaneous Endoscopically Guided Gastrostomy in Patients with Head and Neck Cancer

Abstract
Before any therapy starts, 25%–50% of patients with tumors in the head and neck region have an already markedly reduced nutritional status [7, 10, 11, 26]. The causes are patient (life style etc.) as well as tumor specific [reviews in 6, 12, 26]. Nevertheless, these patients require aggressive multimodal tumor treatment, and the side effects of treatment [1, 3, 9–11, 18, 19, 27] induce further deterioration of the nutritional status.
