Abstract
Plasticizers are used to impart flexibility to plastics such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC). A survey started in 1984 has obtained details on which plasticizers are used in food contact applications in the UK and in what materials, the uses of these materials and the levels of plasticizer both in the materials and in the foods with which they have been in contact. This information was collected in co‐operation with the UK food and packaging industries. Domestic usage of PVC cling‐film, including cooking, was also considered. Dietary intakes of eleven plasticizers from foods packaged in plasticized materials were calculated. The conclusions of government Expert Committees on the findings and the dietary intakes are reported.
