Immunohistochemical Demonstration of the Organization of Serotonin Neurons in the Brain of the Monkey (Macaca fuscata)

Abstract
The distribution and morphological characteristics of the perikarya of serotonin (5-HT) neurons in the brain of the monkey (Macaca fuscata) were studied using a peroxidase-antiperoxidase immunohistochemical method. A wide and scattered distribution of 5-HT neurons was demonstrated in this study. Our immunohistochemical technique revealed for the first time 5-HT neurons in the following areas: the periaqueductal gray lateral to the nucleus raphe dorsalis, the field of the lemniscus lateralis, the nucleus parabrachialis medialis, the nucleus interpeduncularis and certain areas of the reticular formation.
