Intelligent Parking and Power Management System Using Sensors

Abstract
A major problem faced by people in crowded areas of work such as a university, a hospital, an office or any public place, is finding a space to park vehicles. Many-a-times, unauthorized people parking in spaces allotted for authorized officials create confusions and fuss. In bigger parking lots, it becomes difficult to find which spaces are empty and thus takes up a lot of time for simply parking the vehicle. It is also possible that the user forgets where he has parked his car, leading to more confusion. Lighting control in the parking lots is another problem that exists. There is an unnecessary wastage of power in many parking spaces due to the continuous usage of lights even when it is not necessary. The approximate monetary savings (in terms of Indian Rupees) by replacing the luminescent sources and implementing the proposed system has been calculated. In most of the parking spaces we see these days, a lot of manual help is needed in guiding the cars to the vacant spaces, thus adding the cost of employing more people. In a country like India, where the population is in billions, with an increasing amount of infrastructure being built and more and more vehicles being introduced on the road each day, these problems magnify to a very large extent creating a need for a systematic control over this issue. In this paper we propose a smart parking system that provides a solution for all the above-mentioned issues. We use RFID technology to enable access control for vehicles and GSM module to inform the user on the availability of spaces within the parking lots.
