Abstract
Although the incidence and mortality rates for rectal cancer have decreased during the past 20 years1 morbidity rates after rectal cancer surgery remain high.2 The cornerstone of rectal cancer treatment has been surgery, often combined with adjuvant therapies, such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy.3 Patients undergoing resection for rectal cancer can develop a variety of postoperative complications, anastomotic leak (AL) being the most morbid.
