Abstract
Detection of incipient (slowly developing) faults iscrucial in automated maintenance problems where early detectionof worn equipment is required. In this note, a general frameworkfor model-based fault detection and diagnosis of a class ofincipient faults is developed. The changes in the system dynamicsdue to the fault are modeled as nonlinear functions of thestate and input variables, while the time profile of the failure isassumed to be exponentially developing.
