Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis

Abstract

To date 16 people have died from primary amebic meningoencephalitis in the state of Virginia. In the fall of 1969, following two deaths from this disease, a comprehensive statewide survey was conducted in an attempt to define the frequency and distribution of the disease. Autopsy material from 22 patients who died in various parts of the state over the past 15 years from undiagnosed meningitis, encephalitis, or meningoencephalitis was reviewed. No further cases of amebic meningoencephalitis were identified. The data strongly suggest that at present, despite its epidemicity, the disease in Virginia appears to be endemic to one locale, namely an area in Chesterfield County defined by a 5-mile radius. These and related findings are discussed in regards to public health problems which this disease may present.
