Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of implementing a project-based learning model. This study used design of classroom action research in two cycles. The instrument used was in the form of a test instrument to measure the results of knowledge and skills tests, as well as non-test instruments to find out student activity data. The subjects in this study were 42 5A grade students of Indonesian Language Education Study Program, Muhammadiyah University Surakarta, who attended learning tool courses in the odd semester of 2017/2018. Based on the results of the study, aspects of knowledge, skills, and attitudes of students in the basic concepts, classifications, and criteria of visual learning tool for elementary and junior high school students have increased after using the project-based learning model. The results of the knowledge test showed that the average class score on the cycle was 48.7, the first cycle was 48.67, then in the second cycle, it increased to 84.45 in the excellent category. As for the results of the skill test, the pre-cycle class average value is 69.69, the first cycle is 75.64, and in the second cycle is 84.06. The results of the non-data data analysis also showed an increase in student activity. In prusiks the percentage of students who are passive is 16.67%, in cycle one it is reduced to 11.90%, then in cycle 2, it is only 9.52%. When pre-cycle the percentage of students active during lectures is 47.62%, then during period one it increases to 52.38%, and in cycle two it becomes 59.52%.
