Abstract
Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and more cardiovascular disease events in the US have been attributed to hypertension than any other modifiable risk factor.1-3 Antihypertensive medication use and controlling blood pressure (BP) levels reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality among adults with hypertension.4,5 Previous studies have reported that the proportion of US adults with hypertension who were aware they had it and were taking antihypertensive medication increased between 1988-1994 and 2009-2010.6,7 The proportion of US adults with controlled BP (defined as systolic BP [SBP] 8 In addition, racial/ethnic differences in BP control have been reported among US adults, with a lower proportion of non-Hispanic Black adults having controlled BP compared with non-Hispanic White adults.9,10
