Effect of Algorithm-Based Therapy vs Usual Care on Clinical Success and Serious Adverse Events in Patients with Staphylococcal Bacteremia

Abstract
Staphylococci are the most commonly identified pathogens in both hospital-acquired and community-onset bloodstream infections.1 Despite its frequency, the optimal duration of treatment for staphylococcal bacteremia is unknown. Consensus guidelines recommend prolonged courses of antibiotics for complicated staphylococcal bacteremia and shorter courses of therapy for uncomplicated staphylococcal bacteremia, but these are primarily based on low-quality evidence and expert opinion.2-4 As a result, there is considerable variation in treatment practices.5
