Abstract
Beginning January 1, 1994, institutions of higher education will be required to document cause for dismissal of tenured faculty 40 years of age or older. Chronological age will no longer be a legally acceptable cause for dismissal. Certain governance problems are expected to result from this change in federal law (i.e., “uncapping"). Academic gerontologists, especially older gerontologists, could build on both their academic training and their personal experience to help solve these genuine dilemmas.
