Abstract
In this Policy Review Section Michēál Ó Cinnéide, of University College Galway, discusses the role of development agencies in remote rural regions through a case study of the Údáras na Gaeltachta which operates along the western seaboard of the Republic in the Irish speaking area known as the Gaeltacht. He highlights the importance of working with the local community to foster self-help initiatives and local entrepreneurship by providing training schemes, financial support, business advice and support for community development co-operatives. John Tuppen, of Salford University, and Michael Bateman, of Portsmouth Polytechnic, examine the control of office location as an instrument of French regional policy. They focus specifically on the likely impact of the recent relaxation of controls on the Paris region and conclude that there are more fundamental forces at play in determining office location patterns.
