The Glass Ceiling in Social Work: Is It Shatterproof?

Abstract
This article reports the findings of a study that supports the existence of a "glass ceiling" in social work on the basis of gender. An analysis of the demographics of the National Association of Social Workers' membership revealed that male social workers disproportionately hold managerial positions, assume such positions earlier in their careers, and earn more money in these positions than do female social workers. Suggestions are offered about organizational strategies, advocacy, and policies that may be implemented to achieve equity and equality for women in the profession.
