Abstract
Obstacle detection is one of the important aspects to be considered in the development of smart assistive devices. The latest mobility assistive devices are equipped with this function as a safety precaution for the users to avoid obstacles in their path. In this project, a wireless, miniature, low cost, obstacle detection system is proposed. The system is based on optical sensors which can detect a wide range of obstacles, such as small objects on the walkway (e.g., toys), large static obstructions (e.g. building wall), as well as stairs and uneven surfaces, and inform the wearer several times before making contact with the object (e.g., 0.5m, 1.5m and 2m). The sensors are miniature and are suitable for integrating in the shoe for the wearer to undertake normal daily activities. Keywords
