Hemadsorption in Monkey Kidney Cell Cultures of Mycoplasma (PPLO) Recovered from Rats.

Abstract
During attempts to isolate a possible viral etiologic agent of chronic respiratory disease in rats, a transmissible agent was recovered which induced in MKC cultures hemadsorption of guinea pig red cells and a characteristic cytopathic effect. This agent was demonstrated to be a mycoplasma (PPLO) by cultural means and was shown to retain its hemadsorbing character after 14 cell free subcultures. The relation of the PPLO to the rat respiratory disease is not clear. However, the hemadsorbing ability may be of use in classifying PPLO strains.
