Abstract
Patients in American hospitals receive intensive medical treatments.1,2 Given the aggressiveness of medical care provided to inpatients who are seriously ill and approaching death, it is not surprising that medical care provided during the last year of life accounts for 10% to 12% of the US health care budget and 27% of Medicare expenditures.3,4Keywords
