Renal Changes in Gout

Abstract
THE association of renal dysfunction with gout has been stressed from the earliest writings on this disease. Garrod,1 in 1863, stated that, "Even in slighter forms and early stages of gout, the renal organs become seriously impaired." He remarked on the frequency of albuminuria, especially in chronic stages of the disease. More recent studies by Schnitker and Richter,2 Coombs,3 Kinell and Haden4 and Hench5 give an incidence of renal impairment in gout ranging from 22 to 82 per cent.
