Abstract
Attainment of autonomy has been an elusive goal for the profession of nursing. Selected female socialization experiences and socialization experiences unique to nursing are examined for their limiting effects on the development and exercise of autonomy in nurses. Conclusions are drawn from this review of the literature and suggestions are offered regarding means to overcome these limitations.Keywords
