Physical inactivity and body mass index (BMI) are established independent risk factors in the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus; however, the comparative importance and joint relationship of these factors on diabetes is unclear.1-4 In the 1990s, the prevalence of both obesity and diabetes nearly doubled, demonstrating the significance of each as a major public health issue.5
