Successful Treatment of ECHOvirus Meningoencephalitis and Myositis-Fasciitis with Intravenous Immune Globulin Therapy in a Patient with X-Linked Agammaglobulinemia

Abstract
PATIENTS with X-linked agammaglobulinemia (X-LA) characteristically have recurrent bacterial infection; they generally have a normal response to viral infection, presumably because cell-mediated immunity is intact.1 , 2 A notable exception is the usually fatal echovirus-induced meningoencephalitis, which is often associated with a "dermatomyositislike" syndrome.3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 We successfully treated such a patient, who recovered from this complication after prolonged intravenous therapy with high doses of modified immune globulin containing type-specific anti-echovirus antibody.Case ReportA 32-year-old man (Case 8 in an earlier report11) with well-documented X-LA, who had been treated at the University of Washington since 1969 with intramuscular immune globulin (100 mg . . .
