Faculty Opinions recommendation of The road to lysosome-related organelles: Insights from Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome and other rare diseases.

Abstract
Melanin is the major pigment in mammalian skin and hair and is synthesized in specialized cells called melanocytes, which are present in the epidermis and in the matrix and outer root sheath of hair follicles. Since many of the intermediate molecules leading to melanin formation possess high redox toxicity, melanin synthesis is sequestered and executed in a specialized compartment, lysosome-related organelles called melanosomes. This article, together with {1}, helpfully summarizes how melanosomes are formed with a special focus on melanosomal cargo transport.
