Use of salicylaldehyde carbohydrazone as a reagent for the determination of trace amounts of zinc in biological samples and alloys

Abstract
A method based on the reaction of zinc with salicylaldehyde carbohydrazone (SACH) was developed for the fluorimetric determination of microgram amounts of zinc in solution. The reaction is carried out at pH 6.5–6.8 in 60%V/V ethanol. The influence of the reaction variables is discussed. The detection limit is 3 µg l–1 and the range of application is 5–90 µg l–1. The relative standard deviation of the method is 1.8%. The advantages of the proposed method include a high sensitivity of determination. Applications to the determination of zinc in biological samples and alloys are discussed.
